Acceptable Behavior

The concept of "acceptable behavior" is a difficult issue to address. It would be extremely hard to list every action and give it a binary value, especially considering the variance of such a concept between people. Even if we were able to easily distinguish between "acceptable" and "unacceptable", a list of each behavior and its value would quickly become unwieldy and impossible to maintain. Furthermore, we feel that such limits would stifle the creativity of our members.

Instead of listing rules of acceptable behavior, we would like to propose that all members exercise common sense regarding what is appropriate at the space. To that end, we have created the following list of maxims. The maxims listed below are not rules and carry no punishments, they are simply suggestions to help guide the actions of our members while at the space, and they can be changed at any time as the membership sees fit.

The Midsouth Makers Creed

Respect your fellow makers

  • We do not discriminate against anyone based on race, creed, belief, religion, ethnicity, operating system or other criteria.
  • All members are equal. No member is more or less important than any other member, regardless of their status within the organization.
  • We encourage you to respect your fellow makers in both your thoughts and your actions. You may not agree with your fellow maker, but you should always respect them. Our organization would not be possible without a diverse group of people and ideas.
  • Remember that no matter our differences, we all share a common belief that we can better the world around us.

Respect your hackerspace

  • Our space is a shared space. Try to share as best you can, be it a tool, a table, or your time.
  • We do not have a maid - please clean-up after yourself. If you are finished with a part or project, put it away.
  • The space is not your home. If you need to do laundry or take a shower, you should probably go home to do that.
  • If you are intoxicated, please do not drive. We would rather have you sleep on the floor than endanger yourself or others (though we do ask that you try not to make a habit of it).

Respect yourself

  • If you need help, just ask.
  • If you are concerned about something, please tell someone.
  • Be the best person you can be at all times. Always. Forever. The End.
